In many modern western industrial societies, recreational hunting or hunting for sport is recognized as a contested and controversial issue. This stems from tensions over contrasting moral view of how humans relate or rather should relate with the natural world. In this scholarly thesis article the author goes into great depth in examining historical research, supportive collected data sampling, and moral as well as environmental ethics and values. He supports his research extensively though does not offer any of his own credentials, background, or qualifications which makes it somewhat difficult to determine credibility. 

I found this article to be extremely pertinent to the moral and environmental values and ethics I hope to examine in my research. As I hope to do, the author does a great job in offering abstract, contemporary, traditional, and first hand perspectives of the matter, ideas similarly centered around the social construction of nature. The context is relative in time as well as target audience and informative structure of purpose, offering a great example of a well structured research article.

Johnson, Burges. The Lost Art of Profanity. New York: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1948. Print.

This book takes a comprehensive look at the use, history, and psychology of profanity at a time when many of the country’s young men were returning from war.  The book’s main purpose is to inform the reader about how expletives had come to be what they were in the late 1940s, but there is an underlying tone of the author wanting people to critically think when using cuss words as well.

This book was written by a Dr. Burges Johnson of Union College in 1948.  This seems to be a scholarly book where historical research was done as well as current observations.  There is no bibliography in the book, though I wonder if that was as common a practice in the 1940s.  We are also not told what the author’s background is at all.  Despite that, this is a published book, giving credence to the work.

My initial thought was to try to research catch phrases and why they are catchy.  I stumbled across this book and thought it might actually lead my paper in a slightly different direction.  It has the element of history that I wanted to address in my paper, and what’s more catchy than a good swear word/phrase? This book may be a good foundation for my paper, providing information itself as well as posing questions that I may then try to broaden or research further myself.

               In Justice League Origins, a group of aliens, from the planet Apokolips, invade the earth in order to conquer it in the name of their leader DARKSEID.  In order to save Earth from destruction, or whatever plans Darkseid has in mind, the world's mightiest
heroes join forces.  Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman  are the only ones with the brains and power to stop this invasion at its roots, but first they must overcome their differences in order to work together.  Throughout this adventure, author Geoff Johns portrays the different superheroes in an individualistic manor each with their own means, and purpose for fighting. 



                Geoff Johns is a respected author and story
teller in the comic book industry.  His legendary run of Green Lantern is
widely revered as the best portrayal of the characters and stories.  In the
last couple of years Geoff Johns has written for many titles such as Justice
League and Batman Earth 1.  Geoff has also been credited with the increase
in popularity for the character Aquaman.  Geoff Johns is a experienced and
respected author in the comic book industry and thus considered an expert on
the subject of super heroes. 



                This comic book, is relevant to my paper
because it introduces the concept of a super hero  team and what it is they fight for.  In
the book we see many different examples of a superheroes and all the ways they
differ, and all the traits they share.  In the book some super heroes are
born with their powers and see it as their duty to protect the people  (Superman), where as other heroes obtain their powers later in life (flash, green lantern), and some super heroes feel compelled to fight based off of past experiences but in the end they all fight
for the people and the world not themselves, which illustrates my point that super powers don't make you a super hero, your purpose does.

This article discusses the capacity for tool use in the New Caledonian Crow. Scientists found that these crows were able to distinguish between tools that would be helpful or detrimental in their ability to obtain food that was placed just out of the reach of the crows. In some instances, the crows would even discard the detrimental tools before using the beneficial ones, hinting at the idea that they possessed the ability to reason. Other crows experimented with both tool sets, but quickly learned to distinguish between the beneficial and detrimental tools. 

This is a scholarly article written by a scientist in the field of study and published in a scientific journal. It details the experimental process that they went through to obtain the data, so it is a very credible source. 

This is relevant to my research paper because it discusses a specific example of tool use in animals. I will definitely be quoting specific sections of this article, as well as looking into a few of the sources it cited regarding tool use among chimpanzee's.

Messina, Nena, William Burdon, and Michael Prendergast. "Prison-Based Treatment for Drug-Dependent Women Offenders: Treatment Versus No Treatment." Journal of Psychoactive Drugs 38.November (2002): 333-34. Print.

The article describes an experiment which found that when community-based treatment programs after leaving prison are used, the women is much less likely to return to prison. A chapter out of The Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, this article proves to have a lot of credibility. The authors created an experiment, which tested hundreds of women, had two groups, acknowledges factors that may interfere with their research, creating a well-conducted experiment. This article will propel my essay because it discusses treatment programs that the government can provide to recently released inmates that can prevent incarceration again.

This article discusses about the lack of success of professional soccer in the United States with the countrys rich history of ethnic and amateur soccer. It also talks about how ethnic subcultural in soccer has made it available for groups to create a unique cultural identity while evolving into a multicultural nation. In addition provides example of an ethnic amateur club who has grown in success and popularity. 

The source is scholarly research by a scholar in the graduate school of education. He is affiliated with the University of California Berkeley. This article is from a trusted database and author uses many references to support its points. Author appears to be expert in this field of subject. 

The article is relevant to my paper in that it discusses several key points and conclusions for my argument of the lack of popularity soccer has been in america. I will use this to strengthen my argument throughout the paper.

The author's main point was to find out wether or not people with access to medical marijuana were more likely to abuse it. He also explored wether or not they were more likely to use other drugs which they were not, they were less likely. People with medical marijuana cards typically screen at moderate risk for Marijuana abuse as opposed to low or high.

This is a scholarly research paper as it was in a scholar journal and written by a scholar in her field. The author is a certified researcher, and it comes from a trusted journal. The researches used very valid methods of conducting their research. The conclusions drawn from this follow fluidly from the research done, no hasty conclusions were made.

This article is relevant to my paper because I wish to explore the effects medical and recreation marijuana has had on the people who it directly effects. This article talks about how medical marijuana patients are more likely to use marijuana than non patients. This information is the type of thing that sheds negative light on medical marijuana and will provide me with an simple negative effect.

               Laura Sydell's work as a Digital Culture correspondent for National Public Radio focuses on the ways technology affects culture and how people live. The article is an ongoing report on the current and future uses of virtual reality and how it has been demonstrated to the world thus far. She writes about her first experience with Virtual Reality and the progress and shortcomings of the technology as it stands today. Some people get nauseous, and She ponders if it will receive mainstream acceptability. She has been reporting on technology issues since 2003,and for the purposes of the article has hands on experience having used virtual reality technology at various trade shows, and product demonstrations since 2013, at the beginning of the resurgence of this technology.

               I chose this research item because NPR is heard and read by a great number of people across the world,and the author Laura Sydell asks the same question I would ask. Will Virtual Reality affect the way we live, and in what ways?

              There is a quote that I will be using from the article, which is why I chose it.

The Farm Through My Eyes

My biography of place describes the history, land and meaning behind Westmoreland Berry Farm and Orchard.  In order to make a biography about a place, I discuss the past, present and future of the land that is now the farm.  It’s a place that has been in my family since before I was born and somewhere I am lucky enough to visit every time I go home to Northern Virginia.  Sharing the story of my family’s farm is very important to me as you may see after reading this essay.

Every place has history, the farm and the land surrounding the farm has a significant amount of history dating all the way back to the 1600’s.  During this time, Captain John Smith traveled up the Rappahannock River, arrived on the Northern Neck, and became one of the first known Europeans to visit the area.  In the Colonial Period, rich planters brought in slaves and started tobacco plantations in the area because of the excessive amount of natural resources coming from the rivers surrounding the peninsula. The first President, George Washington’s birthplace is located in the area, where people can still visit his home. Along with Washington, President James Madison and Confederate commander during the American Civil War, Robert E. Lee was also born in the area. Stratford Hall, the home of the Lee family can still be visited as well. On one side of the peninsula is the Potomac River, which was controlled by the Union during the American Civil War and on the other side of the peninsula is the Rappahannock that was controlled by the confederates during the war. This led to the peninsula being used as a place for spies from both sides to stay throughout the war. In 1865, after John Wilkes Booth and David Herold killed President Lincoln, the two escaped and were caught just outside the farm. More recently, the Northern Neck has become a tourist attraction because of its beaches, swimming and gambling. The gambling is interesting because it is illegal in Virginia, however the water belongs to Maryland, so there are piers built out into the water with casinos on the end.

History of the Farm: 

Located on the Northern Neck is Westmoreland Berry Farm, a place very dear to my heart.  While building a house at the end of the farm, my grandfather and the men building the house came across evidence of history on our plot of land specifically. Underneath the dirt, they found parts of Indian bones, chards from pottery, and many arrowheads. All evidence that multiple indigenous tribes ounce lived on the land that is now the farm, however it is known that one of these tribes was the Pissasek Indian Village. Also on the farm is evidence of an old plantation home that is believed to have been a brick making facility.  More recent history of the farm includes Alan Voorhees, my grandfather, purchasing the 1600 acres in 1979.  It wasn’t until four years later that her opened the land to the public as a berry farm.  After starting the farm, Alan donated 700 of the acres to the Nature Conservancy of Virginia, in honor of his wife, in order to protect the historic land.

The feeling that everyone gets when arriving at a special place such as a beach, his or her parents home, or wherever it might be is almost indescribable. That’s the feeling I get after the hour and a half drive from McLean Virginia to Westmoreland Berry Farm. After turning off of the state route and on to Berry Farm Lane, the gravel road is lined with fields of apple and peach trees. Whether the fruit is in season or not, it creates an overwhelming calmness. Driving slowly on the gravel road, careful not to stir up too much dirt because it would disrupt the fruit, the excitement grows and eventually the Berry Barn appears. The Berry Barn is located at the top of a hill, looking over the entire farm. Fields and fields of berries is all that’s seen, surrounded by the Rappahannock River. Continuing down the road, lined with fields of fresh berries, our house white house appears at the end of the peninsula, surrounded by the Rappahannock River.

Along with being a family business, the farm is also a place that holds our family, extended family and friends together. Family events have occurred at the farm since way before I was born. I remember growing up; my grandfather hosted an annual party for all of his co-workers, friends and family. The event was always relaxed; the kids could go out on the water and jump on the water trampoline or sit on the pontoon boat and talk. While the adults were up on the land, enjoying wine and catered barbeque pork, coleslaw, salad and bread rolls. The only wedding I’ve been in happened at the farm. My uncle got married at the tip of the peninsula and my sister and I were flower girls, I was 6 years old. I remember all the adults having beers and being loud and in the morning, my sister and I took a kayak to the pontoon boat, which my uncle and aunt had slept on, and brought them breakfast. At the time, we didn’t realize that it might not be a good idea to wake up the couple the morning after their wedding. In High School, my entire club soccer team went to the farm every August for preseason and we ran a mile in the morning, had three more sessions of running throughout the day, and in between we went out on the water to jet ski and tube. Virginia in August is humid and hot, making this week of training seems like the most miserable experience, but it wasn’t. The running was hard and exhausting but every person on the team wanted to go back because there’s something about the farm that creates a bond and a feeling of appreciation and comfort.  Although the larger events at the farm are always fun, it’s the little things at the farm that really make it special to me. I remember being out on the water as a young kid jumping of the boat or kayaking and looking up to the house to see my grandmother and grandfather watching us from the porch with a glass of wine in hand. I would show off and jump off the boat some more. In the morning, around 6 a.m. my grandfather let out a long and loud yawn to wake everyone up. Every evening since I can remember we go up to the Berry Barn and “ raid” the ice cream. There are many flavors and we choose whatever flavor we want. At almost 23, I still do this and will continue to do so with the same excitement as when I was 4. Another small aspect of the farm that is important to me is riding the ATV through acres and acres of fields, picking berries and fixing the ATV when it breaks down in the middle of nowhere. It’s a freedom that at 8 years old is extremely rare to have. The farm provides me with that freedom and responsibility as I can go explore the land on my own, often nearly driving into a spider web or over a snake. Even in the stormiest days, we sit on the porch and watch the storm roll in over the water and sit on the porch as lightning and thunder surrounds us. One special moment for my family and me occurred at the farm when we spread my grandfather’s ashes. We walked down to the very end of the peninsula to the gazebo and filled our wine glasses with the ashes of my grandfather and spread them in the Rappahannock, one of the most meaningful experiences of my life, adding to the importance of Westmoreland Berry Farm.

Westmoreland Berry Farm has a large historical past, a beautiful present, and a lot of hope for the future. One day I hope to be involved in the business at the farm to continue the Voorhees legacy that is Westmoreland Berry Farm. Being able to bring my kids to the farm and giving them what the farm has given me is a dream of mine. Currently my parents are working on changing land ordinances in order to start a brewery on the farm, start growing our own hops and infuse the beer with our berries. I look forward to the future of the farm and enjoying it with my own family one day.
